Minnesota History Tour

May 22-24, 2024

Discover the history of our own state – right in our own backyard! This three-day coach tour begins with pick-ups in Hibbing, Chisholm, Virginia, Eveleth, Duluth, and Carlton. You will stay two nights in the historic St. Paul Hotel near Rice Park.

Historic stops during your three-day tour include the Minnesota State Capitol, Minnesota History CenterJames J. Hill House, Summit Avenue Historic Tour, St. Paul Gangster Tour, Wabasha Street Caves, Fort Snelling, and the St. Paul Cathedral.

Round Trip

Wednesday, May 22
08:00AM — Depart Iron Range and Duluth (specific pick-up times TBA).

10:15AM — Late breakfast / early lunch on own in Hinkley.

11:00AM — Depart Hinkley for St. Paul. 12:30PM — Tour the historic Minnesota History Center. Among the dozens of exhibits on display, don’t miss Charles Schulz’s personal history and his role as the inspiration and artistic talent behind Peanuts and its beloved cast of characters. Follow Schulz from his Minnesota roots to his life in California and track the development of the characters that make up the unique world of Peanuts. 

03:00PM — Get a up close look of democracy in action during a Minnesota State Capital Tour. It features the second-largest self-supported marble dome in the world, exterior marble cleaned and repaired, decorative art, murals and paintings restored to original 1905 patterns and colors, exposed limestone foundation walls and new public spaces in basement.

04:30PM — Hotel Check-In at St. Paul Hotel (350 Market Street, St. Paul, MN 55102).

06:30PM — After getting checked in to your room and refreshed, enjoy an included Dinner at Herbies on the Park, just across the street from your hotel!

08:30PM — The rest of the night is yours to enjoy!
Thursday, May 23
07:00AM — Start your morning with an included Breakfast at the Hotel Restaurant!

09:00AM — Summit Avenue Bus Tour. Hop on board our own motorcoach for a 60-minute tour of highlights of St. Paul and historic Summit Ave.

10:15AM — James J. Hill House Tour. Learn about James J. Hill’s influence on the region and about his network of family members, servants, workers, and guests. Marvel at the impressive house details such as chandeliers, stained glass, and hand-carved woodwork sprawled throughout the home.

12:00PM — Enjoy Lunch on your own and free time along historic Grand Avenue!

03:00PM — Hop on your own motorcoach for a guided St. Paul Gangster Tour! A costumed gangster character is your guide and keep you informed, entertained and amused as we tour the 5-mile area of St. Paul. This tour is the only one that starts outside the historic Castle Royal Nightclub, a gangster hangout from the 1930s, preserved today as the Wabasha Street Caves. Learn why Saint Paul was a center for bootlegging operations and criminal activities during the prohibition era and beyond. Discover how these bad guys were aided and abetted by the Saint Paul Police. See where these criminals lived it up as they planned and executed some of the most nefarious crimes ever perpetrated in the upper Midwest.

05:00PM — Explore the deep, dark dwellings of St. Paul during your own Wabasha Street Cave Tour. See the only remaining restored Gangster Era site. Historic Tour of extensive caves carved into the hillside in long abandoned mining ventures in 1800s. Later, was a mushroom farm, and then developed as a Restaurant Casino and Gangsters’ Hotspot during the 1930s prohibition era. Tour guides point out the bullet holes. Some believe the caves are haunted by the murdered mobsters whose bodies were never found.

06:30PM — Enjoy an included Italian Buffet Dinner and Swing Dancing at the Wabasha Street Caves!

09:00PM — Return to Hotel to enjoy the rest of the evening on your own!
Friday, May 24
07:00AM — Start your morning with an included Breakfast at the Hotel Restaurant!

09:00AM — Our state history runs deep as you tour the Historic Fort Snelling grounds. Discover the deep cultural, social, military, and political history of this historic site near the confluence of the rivers.

11:00AM — Lunch on own at Malcom Yards (501 30th Ave SE, Minneapolis).

01:00PM — Before heading home, your final tour will take you to the historic St. Paul Cathedral. Each year, the Cathedral of Saint Paul welcomes thousands of visitors from all over the world. The Cathedral is recognized as a historical landmark, one of the most prominent buildings in Minnesota, and as a center of spiritual worship.

02:30PM — It’s time now to hit the road and depart for home with all the state’s history swirling in your heads!

Basic insurance includes trip cancellation and interruption coverage, travel delay, medical and evacuation, baggage, and assistance services. Enhanced insurance includes all the above, plus cancellation due to pre-existing conditions. Exact insurance costs will be calculated based on your dates of travel, and cost of the trip. This will be done online at the website above.
